Indiana: owe the IRS or the Indiana Department of Revenue?

Hi, I'm Kathleen. In Indiana, a state tax bill can end up with your county sheriff. That sounds scary, but it's not an arrest warrant. Call or text me and we'll start with what you have.

Need it released fast? Wage garnishments can be released generally within 48 hours, depending on your case. Timing depends on things like unfiled returns, but I get started the same day you call.

What a sheriff tax warrant means

Indiana has a state income tax, run by the Department of Revenue (DOR). When a balance goes unpaid, DOR can issue a tax warrant and send it to your county sheriff to collect. It's not a warrant for your arrest, but it becomes a tax lien on your property and can show up on a credit report or title search. Fees and costs can be added on top of the tax. What the sheriff can do

If a sheriff warrant isn't paid by its due date, the sheriff can collect by wage garnishment, a bank account levy, or a property auction. The sheriff's office can also set up a payment plan of up to one year. DOR says to contact your local sheriff's office first. Source: in.gov/dor, “Sheriff's Warrant”

What happens when you call

Calling about taxes can feel scary. It doesn't have to be. Here's what happens:

  1. A free, private call with me. You talk to me, Kathleen, not a call center. Tell me what's going on, at your own pace. No judgment, and no obligation.
  2. I look at your letters. I read what the IRS and the state sent you and figure out where you really stand: what you owe, for which years, and what's coming next.
  3. You get a clear plan. I lay out your options and next steps in plain English, so you know exactly what to do and you're not guessing anymore.

I named this business for my late husband, Steve, a CWO5 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught me to show up, pay attention to the details, and never leave anyone to face a hard thing alone. After 30 years in taxes, that's how I treat every person who calls me.

Common questions

Is an Indiana tax warrant an arrest warrant?

No. A tax warrant from your county sheriff is a warrant for the amount owed, not for your arrest. It does become a tax lien on your property. Source: in.gov/dor
