Tennessee: IRS taking your paycheck or bank account?
Hi, I'm Kathleen. Tennessee doesn't tax wages, so if you owe income tax, it's the IRS you're dealing with. Call or text me and we'll start with what you have.
Need it released fast? Wage garnishments can be released generally within 48 hours, depending on your case. Timing depends on things like unfiled returns, but I get started the same day you call.
No state tax on wages
Tennessee has no state income tax on earned income, so employers don't withhold state income tax. Pension, Social Security, 401(k) and IRA money isn't taxed by the state either. The old Hall income tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed starting with 2021. For back income taxes, it's the IRS and federal rules. Got a Tennessee letter about an older year?
If you get a Tennessee letter about Hall income tax, it can only be about a year before 2021. If you run a business, a Department of Revenue letter is usually about business or sales taxes, not your wages. Send me what you have and we'll figure out what each letter wants. What happens when you call
Calling about taxes can feel scary. It doesn't have to be. Here's what happens:
- A free, private call with me. You talk to me, Kathleen, not a call center. Tell me what's going on, at your own pace. No judgment, and no obligation.
- I look at your letters. I read what the IRS and the state sent you and figure out where you really stand: what you owe, for which years, and what's coming next.
- You get a clear plan. I lay out your options and next steps in plain English, so you know exactly what to do and you're not guessing anymore.
I named this business for my late husband, Steve, a CWO5 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught me to show up, pay attention to the details, and never leave anyone to face a hard thing alone. After 30 years in taxes, that's how I treat every person who calls me.

Do I have to file a Tennessee income tax return?
Not for wages. Tennessee has no state income tax on earned income, and the Hall income tax was repealed for tax years starting January 1, 2021 or later. You still file your federal return with the IRS. Source: tn.gov/revenue
