Washington: IRS taking your paycheck or bank account?

Hi, I'm Kathleen. Washington doesn't currently have an individual income tax, so if you owe income tax, it's almost always the IRS. Call or text me and we'll start with what you have.

Need it released fast? Wage garnishments can be released generally within 48 hours, depending on your case. Timing depends on things like unfiled returns, but I get started the same day you call.

No individual income tax, for now

Washington doesn't currently have an individual income tax, so there's no Washington income tax return for most people, and back income taxes usually mean the IRS alone. Washington has passed a new tax on very high incomes (over $1 million a year) that starts in 2028. Washington also has a separate capital gains tax that applies to some individuals with large gains. Self-employed? Watch the B&O tax

Almost every business in Washington, including sole proprietors, is subject to the state business and occupation (B&O) tax. It's figured on gross income from the business, not profit, and many cities have their own local B&O tax too. So a Department of Revenue letter is usually about business taxes, while back income taxes on what you earned are an IRS issue. Source: dor.wa.gov, “Business tax structure in Washington State”

What happens when you call

Calling about taxes can feel scary. It doesn't have to be. Here's what happens:

  1. A free, private call with me. You talk to me, Kathleen, not a call center. Tell me what's going on, at your own pace. No judgment, and no obligation.
  2. I look at your letters. I read what the IRS and the state sent you and figure out where you really stand: what you owe, for which years, and what's coming next.
  3. You get a clear plan. I lay out your options and next steps in plain English, so you know exactly what to do and you're not guessing anymore.

I named this business for my late husband, Steve, a CWO5 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught me to show up, pay attention to the details, and never leave anyone to face a hard thing alone. After 30 years in taxes, that's how I treat every person who calls me.

Common questions

Do I file a Washington state income tax return?

Not for wages today. Washington doesn't currently have an individual income tax. A new tax on incomes over $1 million starts in 2028, and a separate capital gains tax applies to some people. You still file your federal return with the IRS. Source: dor.wa.gov
