Massachusetts: owe the IRS or the Massachusetts DOR?

Hi, I'm Kathleen. Massachusetts can move fast after a bill goes unpaid, and its tools go beyond your paycheck. Call or text me and we'll start with what you have.

Need it released fast? Wage garnishments can be released generally within 48 hours, depending on your case. Timing depends on things like unfiled returns, but I get started the same day you call.

How Mass DOR collects

Massachusetts has a state income tax, run by the Department of Revenue (DOR). If a Notice of Assessment isn't paid or appealed, DOR can move to collection, including levying your wages and bank accounts. A bank levy stays in effect for 60 days from when it's served; a wage levy stays until the debt is paid or released. Source: mass.gov, “Frequently Asked Questions Regarding DOR Collections”

Your license can be on the line

For unpaid taxes, DOR can ask the Registry of Motor Vehicles to suspend your driver's license and vehicle registrations. You get a notice first, with 30 days to pay, set up an approved payment agreement, or be approved for hardship. DOR can also act on professional licenses. Don't let those notices sit. Help from Nampa, wherever you are in Massachusetts

I'm based in Nampa, Idaho, and I don't have an office in Massachusetts. I work with people nationwide by phone, text and email. I can help you sort out what you owe the IRS and Mass DOR, and what your next steps are. Snap a photo of your letter, text it to me, and we'll go from there.

What happens when you call

Calling about taxes can feel scary. It doesn't have to be. Here's what happens:

  1. A free, private call with me. You talk to me, Kathleen, not a call center. Tell me what's going on, at your own pace. No judgment, and no obligation.
  2. I look at your letters. I read what the IRS and the state sent you and figure out where you really stand: what you owe, for which years, and what's coming next.
  3. You get a clear plan. I lay out your options and next steps in plain English, so you know exactly what to do and you're not guessing anymore.

I named this business for my late husband, Steve, a CWO5 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught me to show up, pay attention to the details, and never leave anyone to face a hard thing alone. After 30 years in taxes, that's how I treat every person who calls me.

Common questions

Can Massachusetts suspend my driver's license for unpaid taxes?

Yes. After a Notice of Intent to Suspend, you have 30 days to pay, set up an approved payment agreement, or get hardship approval. Otherwise DOR marks your record and the RMV suspends the license 10 days later. Source: mass.gov
