New York: owe the IRS or the NYS Tax Department?

Hi, I'm Kathleen. New York's Tax Department has some collection tools the IRS doesn't, so it pays to know where you stand. Call or text me and we'll start with what you have.

Need it released fast? Wage garnishments can be released generally within 48 hours, depending on your case. Timing depends on things like unfiled returns, but I get started the same day you call.

How New York collects

New York has its own personal income tax, run by the Department of Taxation and Finance. If a balance goes unpaid, it files a tax warrant, which becomes a lien. After that it can send an income execution, which asks you to pay up to 10% of your gross wages each payday and goes to your employer if you don't. It can also levy your bank account. Your driver's license can be on the line

If you owe New York at least $10,000 in past-due tax assessed to you personally, the Tax Department can recommend that the DMV suspend your New York driver's license. You get a notice with 60 days to respond first, and there are exemptions. Don't let that notice sit. Source: tax.ny.gov, “Driver's license suspension”

What happens when you call

Calling about taxes can feel scary. It doesn't have to be. Here's what happens:

  1. A free, private call with me. You talk to me, Kathleen, not a call center. Tell me what's going on, at your own pace. No judgment, and no obligation.
  2. I look at your letters. I read what the IRS and the state sent you and figure out where you really stand: what you owe, for which years, and what's coming next.
  3. You get a clear plan. I lay out your options and next steps in plain English, so you know exactly what to do and you're not guessing anymore.

I named this business for my late husband, Steve, a CWO5 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught me to show up, pay attention to the details, and never leave anyone to face a hard thing alone. After 30 years in taxes, that's how I treat every person who calls me.

Common questions

What is a New York income execution?

It's New York's version of a wage garnishment for state tax. You're asked to pay up to 10% of your gross wages each payday; if you don't, the Tax Department sends it to your employer. It stays in place until the debt is paid. Source: tax.ny.gov
